Member Requirements

Members should be very proud to have been inducted into the National Honor Society, but service, leadership, scholarship, and character still remain requirements for continued members.  If certain requirements are not meant, it could lead to probation or potential dismissal from the society.

Service Requirements

Service is a critical element in NHS membership. It can take many forms, from helping teachers and other students at Long Reach, to helping out at a soup kitchen in Baltimore, to independent community service. â€‹

Service Hour Rules

  • 16 hours/points due per semester

  • Deadlines are every two months on the last day of the month (so you will be reminded at the monthly meeting).

    • First Semester Deadlines

    • October 30th

    • December 31st

    • Second Semester Deadlines

    • February 28th

    • April 30th

    • These dates will be the same for Juniors and Seniors.

    • All submission rules still apply (must be in to the google doc by midnight of the deadline).

    • All service infraction rules remain the same (deadlines are every two months- 8 hours due each two month time frame).

  • Example scenarios:

    • Bob turns in 8 hours at 12:01 am after the deadline.  Bob is on probation and owes an additional 4 hours because he was missing 5-8 by the deadline . If by the semester deadline arrives, his hours are not complete (all 12), he is up for dismissal.

    • Bob turns in 4 hours on time and 4 hours at 12:01 am after the deadline.  Bob is on probation and owes and additional 2 hours because he had 4 in on time but was missing 1-4 by the deadline. If by the semester deadline arrives, his hours are not complete (all 10), he is up for dismissal.

    • Alice turned in 7 hours by the deadline but one two days later. Alice is on probation and owes an additional 2 hours because the majority were in on time.  If by the semester deadline arrives, her hours are not complete (all 10), she is up for dismissal.

    • Alice turned in 0 hours by the deadline and has not yet submitted any. She is on probation and must submit the required 16 by the next deadline as well as an additional 4 hours.  If she is late for the semester deadline, she is up for dismissal.

    • Alice turned in 8 hours by the deadline but has missed 2 meetings.  She is NOT on probation, but she does have to complete 9 hours by the semester deadline because she had more than one excused absence.  Please remember than any absence over 1 (even excused absences) require an extra hour of service.  Excused absences would inform the mentor and the sponsors (obviously if they are sick and not in school, then that is an excused absence). Also, for students to be considered present at the meeting, they must attend the majority of the meeting.

NHS Members Service Infractions
